Travel insurance is not a decorative checkbox for an active international trip. The important question is whether a particular policy fits your itinerary, health circumstances, purchase timing, and financial exposure. Coverage names can sound reassuring while definitions, exclusions, and limits tell a different story.
Match the policy to the itinerary
Ask specifically about recreational hiking at the expected elevation, guided volcano access, snorkeling, boat transfers, swimming, scooters if you might use one, and any other planned activity. Confirm whether the insurer requires licensed operators, safety equipment, or particular supervision. An activity can be common and still fall outside a policy's covered terms.
Review emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation, trip cancellation and interruption, missed connections, delay, baggage, personal liability, and any coverage for nonrefundable retreat payments. Look at exclusions for preexisting conditions and the deadline for any waiver or time-sensitive benefit.
Understand geography and timing
Bali includes areas where definitive care may require transport, and an island stay adds marine transfers. Ask who decides whether evacuation is medically necessary, where transport may go, whether payment must be advanced, and how to contact assistance from Indonesia. Save policy and assistance details offline and share them with an emergency contact.
Buy only after reading the policy wording and understanding refund rules. Insurance purchased after a named storm, illness, volcanic disruption, or other known event emerges may not cover that event. Credit-card benefits may help but should be verified rather than assumed.
Before Healthy as Hell bookings open
Final retreat terms will state any insurance requirement and the dates from which cancellation obligations apply. Healthy as Hell cannot determine whether a policy is suitable for an individual and does not provide insurance or legal advice. Use a licensed professional when you need personalized recommendations.
